I was dead wrong about those credit repair companies, but only one of them

For years I told everyone credit repair was a total scam. Then my buddy Tom used one to get a 70 point jump in 3 months after a medical bill mess. I watched him do the whole thing, they disputed everything line by line for him. Now I'm actually thinking about trying the same company for my old collections. Did I miss the boat on this or have you guys seen legit results from these services?

Disputing line by line isn't actually how credit repair works.

70 points in three months sounds like the kind of story people tell at parties when they want free credit repair. Not saying your buddy is lying but those medical bill disputes can be a fluke depending on the credit bureau's mood that day. I watched someone try the same approach and their score actually dropped because the company kept poking at accounts that were fine. Your mileage may vary big time on this one, line by line disputing is basically gambling with your credit file. Tom probably got lucky and the company is just riding that train for as long as they can.
