Dispute letter took 4 months to actually work on my credit report
I spent a whole afternoon back in March writing a dispute letter for a medical bill that was showing up wrong on my credit report. The bill was for $340 but it belonged to my brother's visit not mine. I sent it certified mail to Equifax like all the advice sites say to do. They responded in 30 days saying it was verified as accurate with no changes. I was pretty frustrated so I waited a month and sent another letter with more proof including my insurance records. That one took almost 60 days and they finally removed it last week. So the whole process from start to finish was about 4 months for one simple mistake. Has anyone else had disputes take way longer than the law says they should?

My buddy Mike went through this same crap last year with TransUnion. He had a late payment from a car loan that he'd already paid off 6 months early with proof of the zero balance. Took him 3 months and 2 letters before they finally dropped it. Meanwhile his score took a hit for no reason and he missed out on a better rate for a refinance he was trying to do. Felt like they were just dragging their feet hoping he'd give up.

In my experience, the bureaus count on people getting tired and giving up before they get results. The whole system is designed to make you jump through hoops until you're exhausted.
