Vent: My fantasy world felt empty until a prompt gave it LIFE, now I debate reliance
I was building a magic system and my characters just WOULDN'T connect, it was so frustrating. Scrolling through prompt lists, one about 'a gift that curses the giver' sparked the entire backstory. But I've heard writers argue that overusing prompts kills original voice, while fans say they jumpstart ANY project. Honestly, figuring this out saved my book, but where do you draw the line?

Honestly the best prompts work like a mirror showing you what you already care about. That curse gift idea probably resonated because it connects to themes you naturally write towards. Your voice was in the driver's seat choosing which prompt to even use.

Oh man, my own ideas without prompts are like a sad sandwich with just bread. That prompt didn't write the story for you, it just gave you the good mustard. The line for me is when I'm just filling in blanks on someone else's template. If that spark leads to a fire you built yourself, who cares where the first match came from? I'd have zero finished things without a jumpstart. My voice is still my voice, even if it needed a nudge to start talking.

But we're all borrowing from something, right? The real test is whether the final thing feels true to you, not where the first piece came from. Getting too hung up on origins just stops the work from happening.
