Switching from detailed outlines to messy drafts ruined my word count but fixed my stories
I used to write 3 page outlines with character backstories, scene beats, even dialogue snippets before starting. After I moved to Denver last year, my laptop died and I lost an outline for a 20k word novella, so I just started typing with only a vague idea. Every draft since then has needed more edits, but the stories actually feel alive now. Is anyone else finding that planning less has made their dialogue sound more like real people, or am I just lazy now?
