Just remembered a workshop in Portland where the instructor said 'write the scene you're scared of first'

I was stuck on a story for weeks, but starting with the hard part in a coffee shop that morning totally broke the block. Anyone else have a weird tip that actually works?

Disagree completely, that sounds like a great way to get stuck forever. If a scene is boring, like @jason752 said, forcing yourself to write it first just kills all your momentum. Sometimes you need to build up to the hard part by writing the easy, fun stuff that makes you want to keep going.

Is that not how people get stuck in any area of life though? You avoid the boring stuff first, then run out of steam before you ever have to face it. Writing the fun scenes first is like eating dessert before dinner, feels good in the moment but you still have to chew through the vegetables eventually. I've seen it with friends who start projects all excited and then quit when the grind hits, because they never built the habit of just pushing through the dull parts. The momentum you're talking about is fake if it can't survive a boring Tuesday.

But what if the scene is just boring?
