I was totally wrong about writing prompts being for beginners only

I used to skip writing prompts thinking they were just for people starting out or stuck in a rut. Then a friend in my local NaNoWriMo group challenged me to try one from r/WritingPrompts every day for 2 weeks. By day 5, I had the opening scene for a short story that ended up getting published in a small lit mag. Has anyone else found prompts useful for breaking out of a specific writing habit or dry spell?

Have you ever come across that whole thing about how constraints can actually make you more creative? I remember reading some piece about how having a set limit or a specific starting point pushes your brain to work in ways you don't normally use. It's like when you're just staring at a blank page, there's too much freedom and it's paralyzing. But if someone hands you a weird little situation to start from, suddenly you have a hook to hang everything on. I've definitely had that experience where a random prompt from a friend got me writing something I never would have thought of on my own. It's honestly kind of wild how much it can open things up.

Laughing at myself a bit here because I spent years thinking prompts were for people who couldn't come up with their own ideas. Then I tried one about a time traveler who only goes forward one minute at a time and ended up with 15 pages before breakfast. Guess who's been eating crow ever since. Funny how our egos keep us from trying the very things that might actually help. I still feel a little silly browsing prompt threads, but the results speak for themselves.
