The difference between a morning lift and an afternoon lift surprised me
I've been running tower cranes for about 12 years now, mostly around the Seattle area. I noticed something a few months back when I had to do a heavy pick at 2 PM instead of my usual 6 AM start. The wind was about the same, but the load felt different. I checked my load charts and realized it wasn't in my head. The temperature swing of about 20 degrees between morning and afternoon changes the air density enough to affect lift capacity on really big loads. Has anyone else noticed this with their picks on hot days?

Makes TOTAL sense when you think about it. I noticed the same thing with some heavy cleaning equipment I haul around - my van actually handles a little different when it's scorching out versus cool morning air. Air density matters more than people give it credit for.

Honestly, "handles a little different" is a very polite way of saying your van starts feeling like a giant sailboat. Good luck outrunning a thunderstorm in that thing.
