Switched to a luffing jib for a tight job in downtown Austin and got a nasty surprise

The counterweight clearance I thought I had was off by 6 feet and nearly tagged a building, has anyone else misjudged swing radius with a luffing setup?

Oh man, that is a scary close call! I had almost the same thing happen on a job in Dallas last year. I doubled checked my swing radius and thought I was fine but the luffing jib caught me too. I was 5 feet off on the counterweight and came within inches of a parking garage. Now I always add a big buffer, like 10 feet minimum, even if it looks tight on paper. You really can't trust the calculations alone.

Isn't that the truth... paper always looks perfect until the real world hits you. I've learned the hard way that site conditions change everything, grouted rebar anchors or a parked truck can throw your whole plan off. Better to look a little paranoid than to scrape concrete or worse.
