My weekend project with a toy crane taught me about center of gravity

I rigged up a small toy crane to lift weights around my garage. Seeing how the base shifts with different loads made the physics click for me. Do you think practical tinkering like this is useful, or just a distraction?

Totally useful. That kind of hands on messing around makes concepts stick way better than just reading about them.

Yeah exactly, it's like you actually learn why things work by getting it wrong first. Those mistakes make the right way stick with you way more.

My grandpa taught me to drive a stick shift by letting me stall his old truck a dozen times in his field. You really get why you need to find the clutch's sweet spot when you're rolling backwards toward a ditch. It's the same with learning to cook, you burn a few sauces and suddenly you understand how heat actually works. That pattern of messing up to get good is baked into so many real world skills.
