Just realized how vital clear hand signals are after a close call on site.
If your spotter isn't locking eyes with you before each move, you're asking for trouble.

On a construction site in Denver last year, I saw how easy it is to mess up without clear signals. My spotter turned his head for a second to answer a question, and I almost backed a forklift into a scaffold. That was the day I made a rule, no talking to spotters unless it's an emergency. Now I insist on a thumbs up before any move, plus the eye contact you mentioned. It feels over the top sometimes, but it beats a trip to the hospital. You just can't cut corners with safety.
