Got called out for my hand signals on a site in Tacoma last Tuesday

The rigger said my 'lower slowly' looked too much like my 'stop' signal, and he almost halted a critical pick. He was right, my wrist was too stiff. I've been practicing in the mirror for ten minutes each morning, focusing on clear, big motions. How do you guys make sure your signals are perfect when the sun is in your eyes?

Practicing in the mirror is smart. For the sun, I always try to set up so the crane op has the sun at their back, if the site layout allows it. Makes a huge difference.

Wow, that's just good planning in general, right?

Yeah, it's one of those things that seems obvious once you see it done right. I've been on sites where they didn't think about the sun and the operator was basically guessing through the glare all afternoon. Slows everything to a crawl. Makes you realize how much of the job is just setting things up so people can actually see what they're doing.
