Bought a used radio for my crane off a guy at a job site. Signal dropped halfway through a lift. Almost cost me a $5,000 window panel.

Five thousand dollars hanging in the air because of a spotty radio signal. That's the kind of thing that makes you never trust used gear from a random guy again. You can't cut corners on the equipment that keeps a job safe. A total system failure during a critical lift is a nightmare scenario. I'd be checking every connection and battery on site before trusting anything again.

Totally agree with @joseph_black. Spotty gear means someone didn't do their checks. That's how you end up with a five thousand dollar paperweight swinging from a crane.

Oh man, that gives me the chills just reading it. I had a similar scare a few years back with a used radio I picked up at a surplus store. I finally learned my lesson after a close call and now I always bring a backup handheld radio on site, especially for critical lifts. I also test the range by walking the whole area with someone calling out numbers before I start, just to be safe. It's a pain, but it's a lot cheaper than a busted window panel.
