A sudden gust showed me why wind checks can't be skipped
I was running a rough terrain crane on a open field project last month. We had a concrete panel to set, and the morning seemed calm. I figured a quick lift would be fine without a full wind check. Mid-lift, a strong breeze kicked up out of nowhere. The panel started spinning and pulling against the boom. I had to fight the controls to keep it steady while signaling the ground crew to clear out. My heart was pounding the whole time. We landed it safely, but it was a pure luck thing. Now I take the extra minute to watch the anemometer, no matter how quiet it looks.

Ever leave the house then run back in to double check the stove? That's me now with wind. Saw a trash bag tumble across a parking lot last week and did a full stop, like my brain was wired to a nonexistent crane cab. My coffee cooled off while I stared at some leaves. Felt pretty dumb, but way less dumb than explaining a flipped load.

Man, I totally get that. Wind can mess with your head after a close call. What helped me was checking the forecast every morning before heading out, just to know what to expect. I also started setting a reminder on my phone to double-check secure loads, so it becomes a habit instead of a panic. It feels silly at first, but better safe than sorry, right? Eventually, the nerves calm down, but you never really stop noticing the wind.
