That $60 wetsuit I bought off Facebook Marketplace actually worked fine

I was dead set on needing a $300 wetsuit for my first open water swim. Found one listed by a guy in Fresno who said he used it twice. Took it to a local pool to test the buoyancy and it kept me floating just as good as the expensive ones. 6 miles of lake swimming later and I haven't had any chafing or leaks. Has anyone else gone cheap on gear and been surprised?

My buddy spent $400 on a wetsuit for a single triathlon and then never used it again. Meanwhile I'm still wearing a $40 surfing wetsuit I got off Craigslist five years ago that has three patches on the knee. Seems like half the time the expensive gear just means you paid more guilt to leave it in the closet.

Read something online about how people often treat expensive gear like collector's items instead of tools.

That line about "paid more guilt to leave it in the closet" is way too accurate. I bought a nice hiking backpack once and then barely used it because I was scared to scratch it up. Meanwhile my cheap wetsuit has been dragged through mud and rocks and still works fine. It's like once you get past a certain point the extra cost is just helping you feel better about yourself. Good to know I'm not the only one who got lucky with a budget find.
