Heard a guy at the Y say 'just run through the pain' and now I'm not sure
I was on the treadmill last Tuesday and overheard this older guy telling a newbie that if your shins hurt, you just keep running and it'll go away. That got me thinking about how there's two camps in triathlon training. One side says push through discomfort to build mental toughness, and the other says listen to your body or you'll end up with a stress fracture like I did at mile 7 of a 10k back in May. My own experience taught me that ignoring sharp pain led to three weeks off, but I also know I'd never have finished my first sprint if I stopped every time my lungs burned. So which is it for the couch to Iron War crowd? Do you run through the ache or do you pull back and ice up? I'm genuinely curious where people draw that line.

Sharp pain is your body screaming at you, just learn the difference between hurt and injured.

Sharp pain means stop, not push through.
