Brick workout in the rain taught me my socks were the problem, not my legs
So last Saturday I did my first real brick session in Portland, 40k bike then a 5k run. It was pouring and I thought that was the challenge. Got through the bike fine, but about a mile into the run my feet felt like lead weights. I kept stopping to check my shoes, thought I had blisters forming. Turns out my cheap cotton socks had soaked up half the river. I switched to some old synthetic pair I had in my car and the last two miles felt almost normal. Now I'm wondering, how many of you have had one dumb gear choice ruin a whole training day? What's the smallest piece of kit that messed you up the most?
The cotton sock trap got me during a half marathon once. Wore brand new thick socks because they felt comfy in the store, then spent 10 miles trying to run on what felt like two wet sponges strapped to my feet. Smallest thing that wrecked me was a watch band that chafed my wrist raw during a century ride, had to take the whole thing off and just guess my pace for the last 30 miles. What's the dumbest gear mistake you've made that you look back on and laugh now?
