A 68 year old in the pool broke my training plan in half
Last Tuesday at the YMCA pool in Fresno, I got out of breath after my 200 yard set and this older guy next to me asked if I was training for something. I told him Ironman 70.3 in March and he just nodded, then said he did his first half ironman at 64 after a heart bypass. He showed me his pace on his watch, 2:10 swim split, and I realized I've been overthinking every drill and gadget instead of just swimming steady laps. I spent 400 bucks on fins, paddles, and a pull buoy that month, and he did it with a $30 pair of goggles. It hit me that my whole plan was about buying my way past the fear of open water, not actually putting in the boring miles. Has anyone else had a moment where a random stranger's simple approach made you toss out months of fancy training notes and start over with just the basics? I'm curious what I should cut first, the drills or the gear?
