I offered a customer a 10% discount to lock in a deck job, and it cost me $340
Last month in Boise I got tired of chasing a guy about his deck rebuild, so I told him I'd knock 10% off if he signed that week. He signed, but then he started adding stuff, wrapping the posts, swapping the railing, and every add-on came with "but I got the discount, right?" By the time I finished I was out about $340 compared to my normal price. I figured a discount would speed things up, not turn into a coupon he could keep using. How do you all handle it when a customer thinks one deal covers every change after that?
Ten percent off the base bid is just that, the base bid, and $340 on add-ons is honestly cheap tuition for learning to write scope into the deal. If wrapping posts and swapping railing weren't in the original contract, the discount shouldn't touch them.
