Warning: That $800 bathroom tile job in Austin nearly ruined my floor

I hired a guy off Craigslist 3 months ago to retile my small bathroom in Austin. He was super nice and had good reviews on his Facebook page, so I figured it was fine. He used mastic in the shower floor area, which I later found out is a no-go because it breaks down over time with water. 3 weeks in the grout started cracking, and now I have water seeping through to the subfloor. Has anyone else dealt with a contractor using the wrong materials like that?

Totally feel your pain. I had a guy redo my guest bathroom floor last year and he used cheap thinset that didn't bond right with the tile, so within a month they were all popping loose like loose teeth. Now I'm stuck paying a real pro to rip it all out and start over, which is way more than I saved by hiring the cheap guy.

Yikes, sounds like you got the "budget friendly" special - pay now OR pay way more later! Nothing like saving a few bucks upfront only to end up with a mini swimming pool under your bathroom floor.
