Paid a guy $500 to resurface my driveway and he ghosted me after the first pass

Last month I hired a local contractor off Craigslist to fix my cracked asphalt driveway in Wichita. He showed up, did a half-assed first pass with a sealcoating machine, then took my $500 deposit and never came back. I tried calling for a week straight and the number was disconnected by day three. Has anyone else had luck getting money back from a contractor who bails mid-job, or is that just gone?

Small claims court ended up being my best bet for something similar. I filed the paperwork myself, cost less than $50, and just having that official notice showed up at their door got them to finally finish the job.
