I used to blow off the 1 star reviews on Angie's until I hired the guy everyone warned me about
I always figured the bad reviews were just people who were impossible to please. So when I needed my water heater swapped out in my rental in Peoria, I saw a plumber with 4.8 stars and a ton of 5 star reviews, but the 1 star ones all said the same thing about him pushing extra work. I skipped right past them and hired him anyway. He showed up, looked at the heater, and spent 20 minutes telling me I needed a whole new line and a $2,400 repipe or my house would flood. I got a second opinion from a guy with 4.4 stars who had a few reviews about being slow to call back, and he swapped the heater for $680 and said the line was fine. Now I read the worst reviews first and look for repeated complaints, not the star average. Anybody else get burned by ignoring the pattern in the 1 stars?
