Hot take: 5 star reviews are not the goal anymore for me
Been doing home renovations for 6 years now and I used to chase perfect ratings. Then a client in Austin left me 4 stars because I finished a bathroom remodel 2 days early. They said it felt rushed even though the work was solid and inspected. After 3 more jobs with similar 4 star results from picky homeowners, I realized those reviews actually brought me better clients than the 5 star ones. The 5 star folks usually wanted discounts or free extras after the fact. Now I tell clients upfront that a perfect score means I missed something in the initial walkthrough. Anyone else notice that 4 star jobs lead to more referrals than the 5 star ones?

Austin had a point though, a 4 star with a written reason tells me way more than 100 generic 5 stars. Sounds like you made peace with it, but I'd be careful treating it like a science, since most folks just rate based on mood that day. Either way, if the referrals are rolling in, who cares what the number says?
