Fence contractor ghosted me after taking a $500 deposit in Austin

I paid a guy $500 to fix my back fence last month and he showed up once, dug two holes, and never came back. Now I'm out the money and my dog keeps escaping. Has anyone else had luck getting deposits back from flaky contractors?

A friend of mine in Georgetown paid a guy named Mike $400 to build a deck last spring. Mike showed up twice, then vanished. She finally got her money back by filing a small claims case after about three months of calling around.

Small claims court is the right move for this kind of thing. Filing the paperwork is a pain but @emma_mitchell's friend proved it usually gets people to pay up when they know you're serious.
