Debate: should you hire the cheapest contractor or the one with the best reviews?

Last month I picked a guy who was $500 less than everyone else for a deck job, and now the boards are already warping. Would you rather save cash up front or pay more for peace of mind based on reviews?

Oh man, that stinks about your deck! lol I had a similar thing happen with a painter. The guy was super cheap and did the job in like two days. But a year later the paint was peeling everywhere and I had to pay someone else double to scrape it all off and redo it. You'd think I'd have learned my lesson, but then I hired a cheap plumber and my pipes froze because he used the wrong kind of insulation. Now I always check the reviews first, even if it hurts my wallet upfront.

Hold on a second. Sometimes a cheap job works out just fine if you know what you're doing. I hired a guy to paint my fence for a hundred bucks and it still looks good three years later. Not everyone who charges low rates is a hack, some are just starting out and need the work. And reviews online can be fake too, so it's not always a guarantee.
