Chat with a kitchen contractor changed my mind about cheap cabinets

I always thought spending big on cabinets was a waste. Just wood and hinges right? Had a conversation with a guy who remodels kitchens for a living last Thursday. He showed me photos of $400 cabinets from Home Depot after just 2 years. Delamination. Warped doors. Particle board swelling from steam. His point was simple - cheap ones cost you more in the long run because you replace them twice as fast. Got me thinking about my own plan to save $3k on materials now. Has anyone else had a contractor talk them out of cutting corners?

My $400 disaster cabinets started sagging so bad I had to prop a door up with a chopstick for six months. If my contractor had shown me those warped photos first, I wouldve just bought the good stuff and saved myself the embarrassment of explaining the chopstick to dinner guests.

My buddy had the same issue with a cheap vanity he put in his bathroom. He used a stack of old magazines to level the door for about a year. Had to tell everyone it was a rustic design choice. The thing finally gave out and the door fell off completely while his mother in law was washing her hands. He ended up spending twice as much on a solid wood one anyway.
