Tracking subs on a clipboard vs. an app, and what my foreman told me last Tuesday
For 11 years I ran my subs off a clipboard with daily sheets and a highlighter, and every Friday at 3pm I would sit in the trailer at the Riverside job and try to figure out who was actually where. Last Tuesday my foreman Rick watched me flip through three pages trying to find one concrete pour and just said "you're losing money in this trailer, not on that deck." So I moved to a simple shared sheet on my phone that the super and two lead guys update as the day goes, and the Friday scramble turned into a ten minute review. The part that shocked me was how many small delays I never saw before because they were buried in my own handwriting. What's the thing you held onto way too long just because it was yours?
My clipboard lasted longer than most of my marriages, and it was about as useful near the end. Held onto that thing for years because it felt like real work, you know, flipping pages and feeling busy. Turns out being busy and being on top of stuff are two different animals. The handwritten delay thing hits home too, because my own notes were so messy I could not tell if a crew was late or if I just wrote like a drunk chicken. Good on Rick for saying it straight and good on you for actually listening instead of getting your feelings hurt. Sometimes the tool we trust the most is just the one hiding the most from us.
