Overheard a landscaper in Boise call a retaining wall 'a suggestion from the dirt'

I was grabbing coffee near a site and heard a guy telling his crew that. He meant the wall was just their best guess at what the soil would allow. It made me rethink all our site plans as just really educated suggestions. Has anyone else had a project where the ground had a different idea than the drawings?

Is this really some big revelation? Plans are always just a starting point because you can't see underground. That landscaper just stated the obvious.

Wait, your coffee maker's manual actually gave a time? Mine just says "long life" next to a picture of a smiling bean.

Man, that's everywhere. My coffee maker's manual said it would last five years, but the hard water here had other plans. Even the best road map is just a suggestion once you start driving and hit real traffic. We make all these plans, but the world is always adding its own notes in the margins.
