Dropped $800 on a GPS total station for layout last summer, total game changer

I was marking foundations with a tape measure and string on a 20 unit townhome job in Austin and kept getting errors over 3 inches. Bought a used Sokkia total station for $800 and cut my layout time down from two days to four hours. Has anyone else made the jump from manual layout to digital and seen their accuracy go way up?

Hey @nora_park72, a transit won't get you the same accuracy a total station does for checking distances.

Man, I gotta disagree with you on that. I've been doing layout for 15 years and a total station is overkill for most townhome foundations if your crew knows how to pull tape and check diagonals. You could have bought a good transit for $200 and gotten the same speed boost without the learning curve.
