Went to the Mothman statue in Point Pleasant and something felt off

I drove out to Point Pleasant last weekend to see the Mothman statue. Everyone talks about how cool and quirky it is, but when I got there the whole setup felt more like a tourist trap than a real tribute. The statue itself is smaller than I expected, maybe 8 feet tall, and the parking lot was packed with people just taking selfies. Did anyone else get the feeling that the town leaned way too hard into the legend just for money, or am I just being cynical?

Used to roll my eyes at people who called the Mothman stuff a cash grab, figured it was just small town pride blown up into something fun. But when I got there and saw the gift shop crammed with cheap plastic Mothman keychains next to a 30 dollar parking fee for a gravel lot, it clicked. The whole block felt like a county fair midway, not a creepy legend. Even the museum had that weird vibe, like they were selling you a mystery instead of preserving one. I left thinking the same thing you are, it's hard to tell where the folklore ends and the hustle begins.

Yeah, that parking fee thing is the real tell. Next time hit up the Silver Bridge overlook at sunset instead, way better vibe and it's free. I just bring my own snacks and skip the gift shop entirely.
