Was sure chemtrails were real until I talked to a pilot friend last Saturday

He showed me the actual flight logs and explained how contrails form based on temp and humidity, now I feel dumb for arguing about it for years. Anyone else have a friend who casually debunked a big one for you?

Actually, the way you said "contrails form based on temp and humidity" is close but not totally right. It's not just temp and humidity, it also depends on the specific air pressure at that altitude and the type of engine exhaust. Pilots call it the Schmidt-Appleman criterion, it's a specific formula that tells you if a contrail will form or not. So it's not like a simple on/off switch based on just two things, it's a whole combination that has to line up perfectly. Your friend was right about the flight logs though, that's solid proof. Just wanted to clear that up because it's a tiny detail but it makes the science even more specific.

Goddamn, that's actually really interesting. I'd heard pilots talk about contrails before but never knew there was a whole formula behind it, makes total sense though because you see them in totally different shapes and lengths depending on the day. Like some mornings you'll look up and there's a plane leaving this fat trail that hangs around forever and then other times it's just gone before you can even point it out to the guy next to you. That Schmidt-Appleman thing probably explains why you'll see one plane leaving a massive cloud and another one flying right next to it just leaving a thin little line or nothing at all. It's not just random weather stuff it's actual math happening up there.
