That time a local radio host went silent for 3 months before reappearing with a different voice

I listen to this morning show on WKRP out of Cincinnati, and back in March 2022, the main guy just stopped showing up. No goodbye, no mention, just a replacement voice. I figured he quit or got fired. Then 3 months later he was back on air, but his voice sounded totally different, like deeper and smoother. A buddy of mine who works at the station told me off the record he had some kind of vocal cord treatment, but why would they hide that? Has anyone else had a local personality vanish and come back acting like nothing happened?

Wait, are you sure that station was actually in Cincinnati?

Funny you mention that, it reminds me of how much stuff just gets quietly swept under the rug in everyday life. Like when a coworker takes a random three month leave and comes back with a new haircut and a completely different attitude, nobody ever actually explains what happened. Same thing with my neighbor who suddenly stopped complaining about his lawn and started watering it at 6am with perfect technique. Something changed but nobody will just say it. The voice thing is just a more dramatic version of the same weird silence people use to avoid awkward conversations.
