Took me 2 weekends and $60 to get my PS5 controller drift fixed and I almost gave up on it
So my PS5 controller started drifting bad about 3 months ago, like the camera would just slowly pan left on its own while I was trying to aim in shooters, and I figured it was a goner. I watched like 6 YouTube videos and every single one said to just buy a new controller for $70, but I'm stubborn so I ordered a $12 kit off Amazon with new sticks and springs. The first attempt was a total disaster, I stripped two screws and lost a tiny spring on my carpet for like 20 minutes, and when I put it back together the drift was WORSE than before. Second weekend I tried again with a proper screwdriver set from Harbor Freight and watched a video from some guy in Ohio who actually explained the potentiometer cleaning part instead of skipping it. Turns out the whole problem was dust and gunk inside the stick module, not the hardware itself, and cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol plus swapping the springs fixed it completely. Total time was probably 6 hours across two weekends which is insane when a new controller costs $70, but now it works perfect and I have leftover parts. Is this a known thing where cleaning fixes drift most of the time, or did I just get lucky?
