My Xbox controller aim finally clicked after I switched to a cheap mouse

I spent 3 years on controller for shooters, blaming lag and my TV, until a friend handed me a $20 wired mouse at a LAN party in Tulsa and I hit triple the headshots in one round, so why do we keep pushing the expensive gear before trying the input swap, has anyone else found their aim was a hardware habit, not a skill issue?
