I thought my TV was the bottleneck until my brother brought over his laptop
For 3 years I blamed my PS5 for looking washed out on my 5 year old TCL in my apartment in Columbus. My brother plugged his RTX 4070 laptop into the same TV and it looked WAY better, so I finally checked my TV settings and found the input was stuck on 'game mode off' with sharpness cranked to 100. One menu setting later and everything popped, no new console or $1,500 PC needed. How many of you have blamed your hardware when it was really just a dumb TV or monitor setting?
I read a while back that most TVs ship with the picture settings set for a showroom floor, not a living room. The sharpness slider is the worst one because past a certain point it stops adding detail and just adds ugly white outlines around everything. I spent two years convinced my old Vizio was dying before somebody told me to turn off the smooth motion setting, and suddenly movies looked like movies again instead of a soap opera.
