Used to hand float everything, now I'm running a power trowel and honestly it stings a little
Ten years ago I would not let a machine touch a slab I was finishing. I floated and troweled every pour by hand, 3000 square feet on a garage floor in Bakersfield took me and two guys a long back breaking afternoon, and I swore the finish was better for it. Now I'm on a ride on trowel for anything over 1500 square feet and my knees and back are the reason. Hurt my lower back bad two winters back and my doctor told me straight up that if I kept hand finishing big pours I would be looking at surgery by 50. So I bought a used machine off a guy in Fresno and the first pour I ran with it I stood there feeling like I cheated. The finish came out flat and tight with barely any trowel marks, and honestly the customer liked it better than my hand work. I still pull the hand trowel out for edges and small patches and I still think you should know how to do it before you lean on a machine. But I stopped pretending the old way was better just because it hurt more. Any of you old timers made the switch and felt weird about it too?
