Tried a new edge tool on a garage slab and it changed my finish

I always used a basic magnesium float for edges, but my buddy lent me his groover with a radiused shoe for a job last week. The control was way better and it left a cleaner line without tearing the concrete. Anyone have a favorite brand for that kind of tool?

Totally get what you mean about the control. I read a forum post a while back where a guy said using a radiused shoe was like the difference between cutting with a dull knife and a sharp one. He did a side-by-side on a driveway apron and the tear-out with his old float was really bad, especially on the curve. The groover just glided through. Made me go out and buy one the next week.

Really that big a deal over a float?

Yeah, I was the same as Robert for a long time. Just used a standard float and figured it was fine. Trying a proper grooving tool with that curved base was a total game changer though. The finish is just so much smoother and you don't get that ragged edge.
