Showerthought: Fiber mesh in driveways - necessary or overkill?

Some finishers swear by adding fiber mesh to prevent cracks, while others skip it for cost and time. I've had jobs where it seemed to help, but on others, no difference. Where do you stand on this?

Ever notice how fiber mesh seems to only help in certain spots? I poured a driveway last summer where the full sun sections cracked anyway, but the shaded area with the same mix held up perfect. Saw the little fibers poking up after the finish, so I know it was in there. Makes me wonder if it's worth the extra cost on the whole job.

Yeah, I had that happen on a patio pour. The south facing edge where the sun beat down all day got a few hairline cracks, but the rest was solid. I'm starting to believe fiber just can't fight a bad temperature swing on its own. Now I focus more on the cure, keeping it wet and covered in those hot spots. The fibers are cheap insurance for plastic shrinkage, but they're not a magic fix for everything.
