Overheard a GC say my joints were 'too pretty' and it bugged me all day

I was doing a sidewalk pour on a commercial job in Austin last Tuesday and the general contractor walked by, pointed at my control joints, and told his assistant they were 'too pretty for a broom finish'... I thought he was complimenting me at first, then it hit me that he meant I was wasting time on lines nobody would see. Do you guys still cut decorative-grade joints on plain broom work, or do you just slam the groover through and move on?
