Old timer told me to wet the subgrade before pouring and I thought he was crazy

For years I'd just dump the mud on dry dirt and wonder why my edges always cracked. Then this guy named Carl over in Clovis told me to soak the ground the night before. Tried it on a 40 yard driveway last Tuesday and I swear I had zero hairline cracks the next morning. Anybody else do this or am I just late to the party?

Did you also let it dry out a bit before you poured... I've heard that's key, you don't want it swimming.
