Just had to pick between a $1200 power trowel rental or buying a used one for $2800 cash.
I went with the rental for a big garage pour in Boise last week, and honestly, the machine ran rough and cost me an extra half day of finishing time (which, you know, is a big deal when the concrete's setting).

Remember my cousin rented a plate compactor that kept dying every twenty minutes. He spent more time driving back to the rental yard arguing than he did on the actual job.

Got a buddy who rented a trencher last summer that shook so bad it loosened every bolt on the machine. He finished the job holding the handle together with zip ties and a prayer, swearing he'd just dig by hand next time.

Jump right into that thought because zip ties are basically the unofficial mechanic of the rental world. I've seen guys keep a walk-behind trencher running for weeks with nothing but a few wraps of electrical tape and some creative cursing. Your buddy's story is a solid reminder that sometimes the most expensive repairs start with "it'll probably hold for one more pass.
