I finally got a smooth finish on a hot pour by adding a splash of cold water to the mix.
We were pouring a small patio in Phoenix last week when the temp spiked to 95. The mix was setting up way too fast for a decent finish. On a hunch, I had the driver add about a half gallon of cold water to the last yard, just to buy a few minutes. It worked, but my foreman said it weakens the slab. Has anyone else tried this, or is it a bad habit?

That's exactly it, it's about the total water. Jana's uncle has the right idea. You're not just adding water, you're swapping warm water for cold to slow the reaction down. The real problem is when guys add extra water on top of the mix design because they didn't plan for the heat. That's what kills the strength. A good batch plant can adjust the mix temperature before it even gets to you.

My uncle's a mason in Tucson and he swears by a cold water splash for those fast sets. He says it's about controlling the workability, not just adding water. The trick is to keep the total water-to-cement ratio the same, so you reduce the mix water first. It's like adjusting a recipe for altitude, not just dumping in more flour.
