Wrote off thermal paste swaps as a placebo, then a Dell from 2016 proved me wrong
For years I'd skip the repaste on customer laptops and just clean the fan, figuring new paste was a waste of 20 minutes. Last Friday a guy brought in an Inspiron 5559 that was hitting 97C at idle and shutting down during Windows updates, so I scraped off the crusty stock paste and put on a thin layer of Arctic MX-4. Temps dropped to 71C under load and the fan stopped sounding like a leaf blower, and I sat there feeling pretty dumb about all the machines I'd handed back before. Now I'm second guessing every "just blow it out" job I've done this year, so how do you all decide when a repaste is actually worth pulling the heatsink?
