Unpopular opinion: I think the push for everyone to use cloud backups is overhyped

Last week, a client brought in their small business server from a local law firm. Their main cloud backup service had a sync error for three months and nobody noticed. They lost all their recent case files because they thought the cloud was set and forget. I had to pull data from old local drives, which saved them, but it took two full days. Everyone acts like local backups are old school, but that physical drive on their shelf was the only thing that worked. I see too many shops just setting up automatic cloud uploads and calling it a day. How many of you still push for a local copy first, even if the client groans about the extra step?

My buddy's graphic design shop had the same thing happen with a big name cloud service. Their "automatic" backup missed six weeks of client logos because of a silent permission error. The local Time Machine drive on the office iMac was the only reason they didn't have to redo everything from scratch.

Did they ever get an explanation from the cloud provider? That's a huge failure that should have triggered some kind of alert. Makes you wonder how often this stuff happens without anyone noticing.
