Spent $400 on a thermal camera that barely works for PC repairs

Picked up a budget thermal camera off Amazon to chase down a hotspot on a gaming laptop. Paid $400 for the thing and the resolution is so bad it just shows a blob where the heat is. Ended up using a $20 IR thermometer probe and touching components by hand to find the short. Anyone else waste cash on fancy tools that turn out to be gimmicks?
