Showerthought: I called thermal paste a scam for 9 months and then a Dell from 2014 humbled me
A customer brought in an old OptiPlex last Tuesday that was shutting down every 20 minutes, and I was ready to sell them a new board. Out of pure laziness I pulled the cooler just to check, and the paste was basically chalk, cracked and gray. I scraped it off, put on a $7 tube of Arctic MX-4 I had sitting in my bench drawer, and it ran a 40 minute stress test at 61C without a hiccup. Now I owe my old shop lead an apology because he bugged me about repasting every machine that came through the door. How do you all decide when it's worth pulling a cooler versus just swapping the whole unit?
