What actually broke when you skipped the updates? Like, did it just not boot one day?

Right? Your "five years of ignored updates" sounds exactly like my old mindset. I finally updated for a security fix and it fixed a weird USB drop-out issue I'd just lived with. Guess we can both be wrong sometimes.
