Hot take: I used to think thermal paste application was just a blob in the middle, but a client's overheating Ryzen 7 tipped me off.

I saw his temps spike to 95C after a repaste, and a teardown showed the paste hadn't spread to the corners. Is the pea method actually flawed, or did I just use too little?

Bet the mount was uneven or you skimped on paste. I always do a thin spread myself, saves the headache.

Maybe it's just a bad mount, not the paste method.

Yeah, a bad mount can do it, but I had the same thing with a Ryzen 9. I switched to spreading a thin layer myself with a card to be sure, and temps dropped a solid ten degrees. The pea method is fine until it isn't.
