Was it the classic "pea method" or a full tube squeezed out like toothpaste? Some people just glob it on like they're frosting a cake, and it makes a huge mess. That extra paste can actually trap heat instead of moving it away. I've seen builds where it oozed over the motherboard and shorted things out. A tiny dot in the middle is all you need for the heat to spread right.

Oh man, that brings back a bad memory. I opened up a friend's PC once and it looked like someone tried to ice a cupcake with the paste. I carefully cleaned it all off with some isopropyl alcohol and a coffee filter. Just put a small grain of rice sized drop in the center when I put the cooler back on. Temps dropped by like 15 degrees after that.
