Finally switched to a thermal camera for motherboard faults, took 3 failed repairs
After burning 2 hours swapping caps on a board that still wouldn't post and another hour on a second dead unit, a $180 thermal imager showed me a shorted VRM in under 5 minutes, so now I check temps before I touch a soldering iron and I'm curious, has anyone else found these things pay for themselves faster than expected?

That imager was the best money I ever spent on the bench. It found a bad mosfet on a laptop board in like thirty seconds when I would have been poking around for an hour. Once you see a hot spot light up on screen you never go back to guessing.
