The dive tender who saved my ass with a garden hose in Port Fourchon

Back in 2009 I was working a pipeline job out of Port Fourchon and had this old Kirby Morgan that kept fogging up no matter what I did with defog. The tender on deck, this older Cajun guy named Ray, saw me struggling on the surface interval and just grabbed a garden hose, sprayed the inside of my helmet, then wiped it with a rag and said "try that, it's the salt film." Swear to god it was night and day, cleared it right up and stayed clear for the rest of the dive. I've used that trick on every helmet I've owned since, but I still think about how nobody in dive school ever mentioned just washing the damn visor with fresh water between dives. Anyone else got a random deckhand tip that stuck with you for years?

That salt film explains why my visor kept clouding on deep runs even with fresh defog every time.
